San Anselmo was incorporated in 1907, and it is one of the more delightful Marin towns. While it is larger than many of its neighbors, San Anselmo retains a small-town charm. The downtown area is very small, but offers a variety of amenities. San Anselmo Ave, parallel to Sir Francis Drake Blvd., is the town's center and it is filled with a variety of charming shops, cafes, galleries, restaurants and boutiques. Known as the antique capital of Northern California, there are more than 100 antique dealers, and the rows of antique shops will keep you busy for hours. In addition, there are a host of annual local events; the Annual Art and Wine Festival, the Antique Dealers Fair and the Country Fair Day, are some of the more well known. San Anselmo also has several parks, and community groups.

San Anselmo is a charming community of older homes amid diverse architectural styles. Overall, the area offers mid-range home prices, but San Anselmo real estate arguably offers the best selection of affordable homes in Marin. Single-family homes generally start around $600,000.

The average sold price in the San Anselmo MLS for 2009 was $862,181 for a single-family home. Along with the rest, San Anselmo home values have slowed recently.
