Mill Valley is the heart of Southern Marin, and it has a magic all its own. At the center is the charming downtown built among the towering redwoods. Mill Valley is known for its homes nestled in the redwood trees. The area is a mix of architectures, but is best known for its 'brown-shingle', bungalow and Craftsman-style homes. Mill Valley's central location and good schools make it highly desirable and housing costs tend toward the high side. The average sold price for homes on the Mill Valley MLS was $1,449,378 in 2008. Real estate sales have been robust and prices are steady.

Mill Valley is a very popular area of Southern Marin. It has one of the larger populations in the county, and it's known to attract thriving young families in particular. Generally speaking, education levels are high and residents work in a wide range of professions.

Mill Valley residents are served by the Mill Valley School District. Mill Valley's schools generally rank in the top ten percent of the state, making it an appealing town for young families. District enrollment is around 2,250 students. Students go to one of five elementary schools: Edna Maguire, Old Mill, Park, Strawberry Point or Tam Valley. The Mill Valley Middle school serves all residents, and graduates attend Tamalpais High in the Tamalpais Union High School District.
